LIVERPOOL, England: Arne Slot’s comfortable start to life as Liverpool manager continued when his new team won 2-0 over Brentford in the English Premier League (EPL) action early this morning.

Liverpool dominated from the start, scoring a superb goal following a quick counter-attack when Luis Diaz fired into the corner for his first goal of the season after 13 minutes.

Brentford responded well, going close to scoring with two close-range headers in each half, but Mohamed Salah ended the visitors’ hopes of picking up a point from their trip to Anfield with a second 20 minutes from time.

“We know Liverpool are a good team,” said Brentford boss Thomas Frank.

“For me Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool are three teams that are a little above each other, among the best teams in Europe.

“We expected more, we came here to try to win, but we couldn’t do it.”

LONDON: Mikel Arteta was satisfied with Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Lyon in the Emirates Cup which closed the Premier League club’s pre-season training.

The Gunners beat the French club thanks to goals from William Saliba and Gabriel in the final pre-season game, after the tour of the United States.

Arsenal will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the opening action of the English Premier League, this Saturday.

Asked if the Gunners were ready to start the season on a high note, Arteta said: “It seems that way to me. The way we started the game was for sure. Just need to keep it up for 90 minutes.

“That is the target and goal we have to set. There are many positive aspects that can be taken from this match.”

The operator from Spain is also satisfied with his team’s preparations ahead of the new league season.

“I think overall it’s been a positive pre-season. It’s been a success, and then two very competitive games here (Emirates).
